How to Prevent Bedbugs

The simplest method to not have your property plagued with bed bugs would be to prevent them from getting in there in the first place. In this article, we will become familiar with easy steps that you can take to decrease your chance of getting bedbugs in your properties.

Bedbugs are brown colored bugs about one millimeter long that survive by feeding around the bloodstream of creatures, including humans. After they have discovered a food source, they generally will live within 15 ft (this can often happen around beds, hence the name). Using their small size, they’re very difficult to find, causing them to be very hard to eliminate.

One of the likely reasons that a property becomes plagued with bed bugs is actually through hotel rooms or by staying in any residence overnight that has them. The bugs will often hitch a ride home in the clothes – this can be difficult to manage if you have multiple tenants, but simply making people aware of this whenever they visit a hotel or other residence can help reduce the chances of them bringing an infestation onto your property.

Individuals who travel are in the greatest risk for obtaining bed bugs. However, there are ways to reduce the risk of letting one catch a ride home along with you. When traveling, at the very least you should carry with you a small powerful flashlight. So when you do make use of a hotel, use the flashlight to quickly examine the room before staying there. They are of a small size but there are specific places that you can look – such as under the matress, and along the edges of the wall and in corners where there is carpeting (you would see small dark dots – those being the bedbugs).

The easiest way to deal with bedbugs is of course to not get them, but if you do have them – what next? There are a few things you can do – it will be quite a labor intensive process, so the easiest thing is to pay someone else to deal with it.

Vacuum/Clean Linens.

This one may be obvious, but a thorough cleaning is necessary. When you vacuum, immediately remove the bag and dispose of it outside. You also need to clean all linens that you have – even ones not on the bed currently in use – in hot water. I would recommend the same with clothes – and until ridding the property completely, keep the cleaned linens and clothing segregated

In general, make the space that is currently infested immaculate. You may need to bring in professionals, ultimately, but these steps should be taken to begin with

Encase Matress.

There are woven covers you can acquire which prevent bedbugs from entering or escaping matresses/boxsprings. It can be wise to do this if you currently have a problem – but you may need to keep these covered for over a year, as bedbugs can live that long without feeding.

Professional Extermination

This is the most recommended route to take. There are a variety of things you can do yourself – but if you have an actual bedbug problem on your hands, your safest bet is to bring in professionals to deal with the problem. They will be able to advise you best on your problem, and of course remove the offending bugs.
